Since 1982, National Gardening Association has provided the Youth Garden Grant to over 5,000 schools, nonprofits, and youth programs across the United States. Youth Garden Grant has contributed over 2.8 million dollars in funding to youth gardening initiatives and serves as National Gardening Association’s longest standing grant program. This year, Youth Garden Grant is sponsored by NGA’s generous donor base with contributions from Bonnie Plants, Ames, and High Mowing Organic Seeds. Twenty (20) awards will be offered this year to support programs in the United States.

Rustic Cedar has joined our list of donors, bringing the value of our YGG packages to $1,000! 20 Rustic Cedar raised beds will be donated!  Each winner will receive a garden bed.  Thank you Rustic Cedar!

Growums has joined our list of donors for the 2014 Youth Garden Grant!  This year's 20 winners will receive two (2) Growums Garden Kits. Thank you Growums!

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY

To be eligible for the 2014 Youth Garden Grant, your school or organization must plan to garden in 2014 with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18. The selection of winners is based on the demonstrated relationship between the garden program and education related to the environment, health and nutrition issues, character education, and entrepreneurship in the United States.


GRANT PACKAGES

This year we will present awards to 20 schools or youth programs. 20 programs will receive a $500 gift certificate to the Gardening with Kids online store. Each program will also receive a tool package from Ames, plant starts from Bonnie Plants, two (2) Growums Garden Kits, a raised bed from Rustic Cedar and a generous seed donation from High Mowing Seeds.


SUBMISSION PROCESS

Due Date: Applications must be submitted by December 6th, 2013.

To apply for a garden grant by logging in, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your KidsGardening.org user account.
  2. Click “Apply Now” (the big blue button on this page!)
  3. Fill out the application
  4. SUBMIT the application.
    Note: Applications that are not submitted will not be considered for the award, look for an email confirmation that your application has been submitted.

WHAT CAN EXPECT FROM THE ONLINE APPLICATION

Please have basic information available about your garden program, consider the following questions, there are on the application and must be filled out for us to consider your program for the award:

  • Program Contact information
  • Program numbers (estimated number of participants by age, poverty and free and reduced lunch rates)
  • Goals, information on how the program is sustained, and program overview (for both start-up programs and established)
  • Photos and letters of support are optional

AWARD FULFILLMENT

Winners will be notified via email on February 7th, 2014. A list of winners will also be posted on KidsGardening.org. Awards will be distributed in February 2014.


REPORTING REQUIREMENT

Grant awardees will be required to report about their garden’s progress within six month of receiving the award. These reports help NGA determine the overall impact of the grant program and gather ongoing support for youth gardening. If you do not feel that you will be able to comply with these requirements please do not apply. Recipients who do not complete these requirements will not be eligible to apply for future awards.

Reporting requirements include:

No purchase necessary. Purchase of a product from National Gardening Association or our friends at High Mowing Seeds, Rustic Cedar, Ames, Growums, or Bonnie Plants do not improve your chances of receiving an award, but we sure do appreciate it.

  • 5-10 digital images of the school garden
  • Parental release forms to accompany images of children
  • Complete a survey
  • Provide an updated overview of the garden program
